What is a motor skill?
A movement series learnt and stored in long term memory
What is positive transfer?
The two skills are similar and having already mastered one of the skills, its easier to learn the second skill easier
What is negative transfer?
Familiar stimulus creates a different response (e.g. different tennis court could create different bounce)
What is bilateral transfer?
Transfer of learning from one limb to another -> only occurs through gaining a cognitive understanding of the skill
What is proactive transfer?
A skill learned previously affects a skill to be learnt in the future
What is retroactive transfer?
Learning a new skills affects a skill learned previously
How do you optimise positive transfer?
Offer variable practices which imitate a game
Make performer aware of transferable elements
Clear demonstrations
Identify when negative transfer occurs
