Mechanical
Describe verbal guidance:
Used to describe/explain how to perform a skill/activity
Advantages of verbal guidance:
Can reinforce good movement
Identify and correct errors
Holds attention and motivates performer
Disadvantages of verbal guidance:
Can cause information overload
Skills hindered if guidance is inaccurate
Describe visual guidance:
Use demos/images to help a learner perform a skill
(Pictures/videos/slow-mo)
Image needs to be accurate
Advantages of visual guidance:
Easy to create mental picture
Encourages observational learning
Disadvantages of visual guidance:
Bad habits could form if demo is incorrect
Visual representations could be unclear or too quick
Describe manual/mechanical guidance:
Using physical support/restriction or a mechanical device
Can force a response by guiding a learner through a new skill
Allows for kinaesthetic feel
E.g. Float in swimming, focus on leg kick
Advantages of manual/mechanical guidance:
Helps with confidence and feeling safe
Can isolate skill action
Disadvantages of manual/mechanical guidance:
Can be over restrictive (feel like lack of control)
Remove kinaesthetic feel
