Skill Continua & Transfer Of Skills Flashcards
What is the difference between SKILL and ABILITY?
Ability:
• Innate
• Genetic & Enduring
• Long Lasting
SKILL:
• Learnt
• Learned and are built upon abilities
What types of ability is there?
Perceptual Ability
- Interpreting The Environment
Psychomotor/Motor Ability
- Responding Correctly
What subtypes of skill is there?
Cognitive Skill:
- Deciding which skill to perform
Psychomotor/Motor Skill:
- Responding with the correct skill accurately
What are the characteristics of skills?
Hint: ACEFACE
Accurate
Consistent
Efficient
Fluent
Aesthetically Pleasing
Controlled
Effortless
What Continuums and Skills are there?
• Open/Closed
• Self Paced/Externally Paced
• Discrete/Serial/Continuous
• Gross/Fine
• Low organisation/High organisation
• Simple/Complex
Characteristics of Open/Closed Continua.
How much of an influence the environment has on a skill
Open:
• Decision-making is needed
• Environment changes and has an impact on the skill
• Performance should be adaptable
Closed:
• Much less decision-making required
• Environment is predictable
• Self-paced
Characteristics of Self Paced/Externally Paced Continua.
How much control the performer has over the timing of the skill
Self Paced:
• Decide when to start
• Decide speed of movement
• Performer is in control of the timing
• Closed skills
Externally Paced:
• External factor affects start time
• External factor affects speed of movement
• Performer is not in control of the timing
• Open skills
Continua characteristics of
Discrete/Serial/Continuous.
How apparent the start and end of the skill are
Discrete:
• Clear beginning and ending
• Short skill
Serial:
• Series of discrete skills performed in a sequence
• Particular order of subroutines
Continuous:
• No clear beginning and ending - repetitive actions
• Can only be one of these 4 skills - Running, Swimming, Cycling, Rowing
Continua characteristics of Gross/Fine
How precise the movement is
Fine:
• Small muscle groups
• Requires coordination
• Requires high level of control
Gross:
• Large muscle groups
• Requires lower levels of control
• Involves basic motor skills
Continua characteristics of
Low organisation/High organisation.
The complexity of the combination of the subroutines
Low Organisation:
• Subroutines are easy to seperate
• Simple skills
• Discrete subroutines
• Little cognitive processes needed
High Organisation:
• Subroutines are difficult to seperate
• Complex skills
• High level of cognitive processes needed
Continua characteristics of Simple/Complex
How technically difficult the skill is to perform
Simple:
• Little information to process
• Few subroutines
• Cognitive processes are less of a priority
Complex:
• Lots of information to process
• Multiple subroutines
• Decision-making and coordination are important
