Anxiety can be defined as a feeling of apprehension when faced with a stimulus that is perceived to be threatening.

State anxiety refers to how an individual reacts to a specific stressful situation.
- Temporary response to a threatening situation.
- Differs depending on situation.

Trait anxiety refers to an individual’s tendency to react to a stress in a specific way based on personality.
What is cognitive anxiety?
Cognitive anxiety is the mental/psychological reactions to anxiety.
What is somatic anxiety?
Somatic anxiety is the physiological effects that anxiety can have on an individual.
Cognitive anxiety symptoms
- Loss of concentration or focus
- Poor selective attention
- Confusion
- Feelings of uneasiness
- Negative thoughts
- Feelings of weakness
- Poor decision making
- Feelings of being unsatisfied
Somatic anxiety symptoms
- Headache
- Muscular tension
- Increased HR
- Increased ventilation rate

What is the SCAT test?
The Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT) is a self-report questionnaire which evaluates how they feel prior to competition and their views towards participating in competitive sport in general.
What are the advantages of the SCAT test?
- High levels of reliability
- High validity
- Strong predictor of competitive state anxiety.
- Quick & easy
- Cheap
What are the disadvantages of the SCAT test?
- Performer may answer the question as socially desirable as possible

Physiological anxiety tests include tests such as measuring the HR response to a variety of environments.
- Determining physiological signs of anxiety.
What are the advantages of using physiological test to measure anxiety?
- Provides real-time and accurate measurements
- Objective data
What are the disadvantages of using physiological tests to measure anxiety?
- Expensive
- Takes time
- Wearing the equipment can sometimes cause a spike in anxiety.
