Baddley & Hitch Working Memory Model Flashcards
How does the memory work?
- Sense organs feed into the STSS
- STSS filters info into STM
- STM runs motor programmes
- STM feeds into LTM
- LTM sends requested info to STM.
What are Sense Organs?
What is the STSS and it’s characteristics?
Short Term Memory Store
• Temporary storage facility
• 0.5 seconds - 1 second duration
• Stores lots of information
• Filters info through Selective Attention
• Receives info from sense organs
What is the STM and it’s characteristics?
Short Term Memory
• Stores 5 - 9 pieces of info at a time
• Store for 20-30 seconds
• Receives info from STSS
• Requests Motor Programmes from our LTM
• Runs our Motor Programmes
What is the LTM and its characteristics?
Long Term Memory
• Stores info including Motor Programmes
• Infinite Capacity
• Stores indefinitely
• Sends requested info to STM
Something is learnt when…
Something is learnt when it’s in the LTM
Which theorists created the working memory model?
Baddley and Hitch
What 4 things are in the working memory model?
Hint: CPVE
• Central Executive
• Phonological Loop
• Visio-spatial Sketchpad
• Episodic Buffer
What is the Central Executive role in the working memory model?
• Drives the whole system
• Allocates data to the components
• Deals with cognitive tasks such as mental arithmetic and problem-solving.
What is the PHONOLOGICAL LOOP role in the working memory model
• Temporary storage system for auditory information
• Subdivided into the phonological store and articulating process
What is the PHONOLOGICAL STORE also known as?
The Inner Ear
What is the ARTICULATORY PROCESS also known as and what does it do?
The Inner Voice
- Rehearses words to keep them in working memory whilst needed.
What is the VISUO-SPATIAL SKETCHPADS role in the working memory model?
• Responsible for dealing with visual and spatial information
• Subdivides into the visual cache and the inner scribe
What does the VISUAL CACHE do?
Stores visual data such as shape and colour.
What does the INNER SCRIBE do?
Records the arrangements of objects and transfers information to the central executive.
