SKELETAL SYSTEM: Parts of a Long Bone Flashcards
What is the end of a long bone called?
epiphysis
(distal epiphysis - away from the center of the body)
(proximal epiphysis - close to the center of the body)
What is the middle of a long bone called?
diaphysis
“shaft”
What covers the bone when bones meet at synovial joints?
Articular cartilage - a thin layer of cartilage
What is the line of cartilage within a bone called?
Epiphyseal plates
- lies between the epiphysis and metaphyses - where the growth of a long bone occurs; hence “growth plate”
What houses the red marrow?
Spongy bound - found at the end of long bones
What houses the yellow marrow?
Medullary cavity - hollow part of the bone
What is the wall of the diaphysis called?
compact bone
consists of tightly packed tissue, inorganic salts, organic ground substance
What is the layer of tissue that lines the medullary cavity? What kind of tissue is it?
Endosteum
membranous layer of dense connective tissue
Where is fat stored? Where is it found in the bone?
Stored in the yellow marrow.
It’s found in the shaft (diaphysis)
What is the layer of tissue that lines the outside of the bone? What kind of tissue is it?
The periosteum
membranous layer of dense connective tissue
What enters the body through the foramen?
Vascular or nervous tissue
