Endocrine System Flashcards
Where is the hypothalamus?
it’s in the center of the brain, near the pituitary gland
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
It controls the pituitary gland, secretes releasing hormones, and maintains homeostasis in the body.
What hormones does the hypothalamus release?
The hypothalamus releases corticotrophin, dopamine (reward, motivation, memory, attention), Growth hormone, somatostatin, gonadotrophin, and thyrotrophi.
Where is the pituitary gland?
Right under hypothalamus, tiny
What is the role of the pituitary gland?
To control the other glands (except the hypothalamus) ; “the master gland”
What hormones does the pituitary gland produce?
Growth hormone (helps maintain healthy muscles and bones) / Prolactin (causes breast milk to be produced after childbirth)
Where is the thyroid gland?
The thyroid gland is in the throat.
What hormones does the thyroid produce?
T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine)
Where is the thymus gland?
The thymus gland is between the lungs, in the chest
What is the function of the thymus gland?
The thymus gland makes T-cells, which are critical to the immune system.
What hormones does the thymus gland make?
The thymus gland makes thymopoietin (fuels the production of T-cells/ tells the pituitary gland to make hormones)
Where is the adrenal gland?
The adrenal glands are small, triangle-shaped glands on tp of the kidneys.
What is the function of the adrenal gland?
Help regulate metabolism, the immune system, and blood pressure.
What hormones does the adrenal gland produce?
The adrenal gland produces cortisol (helps regulates the body’s response to stress) and epinephrine (elicits strong emotions like fear or anger)
Where are the ovaries?
the ovaries are in the vag
