Nervous System Flashcards
What is the Nervous System composed of?
nerves, the brain, the spinal cord, sensory organs, glial cells, and connective tissue
What are glial cells?
They are cells that support the nervous system.
What are the functions of the Nervous System?
- To transmit/receive messages from muscles for movement
- It acts as a sensory system to protect and enable sensory responses, like smell and sight
- It coordinates different organ systems and activities to maintain homeostasis
What are the divisions of the Nervous System?
CNS (central nervous system) and PNS (peripheral nervous system)
CNS - brain and spinal cord
PNS - nerves that extend from the brain (Cranial nerves) and spinal cords (spinal nerves)
What are neurons?
They are nerve cells.
What is the function of a neuron?
A neuron’s function is to send and receive electrical impulses, which is the basis of the body’s communication.
Why is an insulator needed for a neuron?
Neurons need an insulator so that their impulse doesn’t spread.
What are the 3 types of neurons?
- sensory neuron
- interneuron
- motor neuron
What type of matter has myelin sheathing?
White matter
