SKELETAL SYSTEM: Functions Flashcards
What are the 5 functions?
- movement
- support
- protection
- makes blood
- storage
How does the skeletal system allow movement?
The skeletal system provides points of attachment for muscles. Legs + arms move when muscles pull on bones.
How does the skeletal system provide support?
the backbone is the main support center for the upper body- it holds up the head + protects the spinal cord
How does the skeletal system provide protection?
the bones of the skull protect the brain. Ribs protect the lungs and heart from injury
How does the skeletal system make blood?
the skeletal system makes blood by forming red and white blood cells by tissue called marrow, which is in the center of the body
How does the skeletal system provide storage?
The skeletal system provides storage because bones store minerals like calcium and phosphorus for use by the body
