Skeletal System Lesson 6 Responses and Adaptations Flashcards

1
Q

What are responses?

A

Responses are immediate, short term ways that the skeletal system reacts when you exercise. The reactions are short lived and when you stop exercise the skeletal system stops reacting this way.

Q

What are adaptations?

A

These are the long term ways the skeletal system changes due to regular training. These changes are lasting, provided you do not stop regular training. Often referred to as chronic response.

Q

What is arthritis?

A

Arthritis is a condition where there is an inflammation/swelling within a synovial joint causing pain and stiffness in the joint.
The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis.
Regular exercise can reduce the risk of developing arthritis in later life.
This arthritis is caused by a reduction to the normal amount of cartilage tissue due to it being worn away, which results in the ends of the bones rubbing together.

Q

What is osteoporosis?

A

Osteoporosis is a weakening of bones caused by a loss of calcium or a lack of vitamin D.

As you become older your bones slowly lose their mineral density and naturally become more brittle and fragile.

Weight bearing exercise can help to prevent osteoporosis by promoting increased uptake of minerals, resulting in an increase in bone mineral density.
