Skeletal System Lesson 5 Movement at joints Flashcards
What is abduction?
The movement of a limb away from the midline of the body.
What is adduction?
The movement of a limb towards the midline of the body.
What is Horizontal flexion?
It is bending the elbow while the arm is in front of your body the elbow faces out to the side.
What is Horizontal extension?
It is straightening the arm at the elbow, when the elbow is turned out.
What is lateral flexion?
It is the movement of bending sideways.
What is Hyper-Extension?
It involves the movement beyond the normal anatomical position in a direction opposite to flexion.
For example arching the spine.
What is Horizontal Abduction?
This is the movement of bringing your arm across your your body and then across your body outwards.
What is Horizontal Adduction?
This is the movement of bringing your arm arm across your body at shoulder height.
For example hitting the ball in table tennis.
What is circumduction?
This is the movement in the shape of a cone or circle which allows 360 degree movement so it allows flexion, extension, abduction and adduction in the movement.
For example the butterfly stroke in swimming and bowling in cricket.
