Muscular System Lesson 6 Additional Factors Flashcards
What additional factors affect the muscular system and their impact on exercise and performance.
Age
How does age impact on exercise and performance?
Muscle deteriorates with age
As we get older we lose a percentage of our strength
Average loss of muscle mass is approximately 30%
This is between the ages 50-70
The rate increases after this age
Which type of lifestyle accelerates loss of muscle?
Sedentary
This is when you would not do any exercise outside of school or work and you would just sit and watch Tv eating not great food.
What is cramp?
Cramp is a sudden strong contraction of a muscle. It can last for a few seconds, minutes and it can be very painful. You have no control over the muscle while it is experiencing cramp. The muscle fibres have contracted, meaning they have shortened and hard mass of muscle fibres will form under the skin.
What are causes of cramp?
Using your muscles too much. This can happen in a triathlon, marathon or when in extra time in football.
Dehydration-lack of fluid, this can happen in high endurance activities such as marathon runners.
Holding a position for a long period of time, an example of this is when holding the rings in gymnastics.
If a performer suffers from cramp during performance, what do they need to do?
Remain hydrated
Maintain appropriate balance of electrolytes
Maintain correct level of minerals especially if they take part in endurance activities.
You also have to stretch before and after your physical activity.
