Skeletal System Flashcards
Description of ligaments
Slightly elastic criss-cross collagen fibres
Attach bone to bone
Stabilises joints to allow normal joint range of motion whilst preventing joint dislocation
Description of tendons
Parallel collagen fibres allowing more elasticity
Attach muscle to bone
Transmit muscular force to bones to cause movement
Name and describe the two types of cartilage
Hyaline (articular) - at the end of bones forming a smooth, firm surface between articulating bones
Fibre cartilage - tough slightly flexible acting as a shock absorber and lubricant
What are the seven functions of the skeletal system
Support Lever system Attachment sites Protection Red blood cells Shape Storage
The axial skeleton
Forms the axis of the body
The appendicular skeleton
Forms the upper and lower limbs that attach to the axial skeleton
