Skeletal System Flashcards
How many bones are in the body?
~206 bones
What are the 2 functional divisions?
- Axial Skeleton
2. Appendicular Skeleton
What is Cartilage?
–>Connective tissue that allows flexibility; is a smooth surface for joints
–>Avascular
How is cartilage nourished?
By diffusion from nearby arteries and synovial fluid
What is a bone made of?
Connective tissue lattice with mineral crystals
What are the 5 functions of bones?
- Support
- Protect
- Movement
- Storage of salts
- Marrow production
What is the fibrous cartilage called that covers bones?
Periosteum
What are the 2 types of bones?
- Compact Bone
2. Spongy Bone
Compact Bone
Dense; forms outer layer; usually thin but thicker in weight bearing bones
Spongy Bone
Has large spaces divided by trabeculae
–>Inside trabeculae there is a hollow space called the Medullary cavity (contains red & yellow bone marrow) - site of blood & platelet formation
5 Bone Shapes
- Long Bones (ex: femur or humerus)
- Short Bones (ex: wrist or ankle)
- Flat Bones (ex: in the skull)
- Irregular Bones (ex: facial bones)
- Sesamoid Bones (ex: patella) - found in tendons
Diaphysis
Shaft of bone
Epiphysis
End of bone
Epiphysial Plate
Cartilaginous plate between Diaphysis & Epiphysis
WHERE BONE GROWTH OCCURS (fuses after puberty)
Epiphysial Line
What is left after growth stops (visible on x-ray)
