Skeletal System 2 Flashcards
What is the organization of the axial skeleton?
-skull, vertebral column and thoracic cage
What is the organization of the appendicular skeleton?
- pectoral girdle and upper limb
- pelvic girdle and lower limb
Skull includes
cranial bones, facial bones and sutures
Cranial bones are
occipital, temporal, parietal, frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid
Facial bones include
maxillae, palatine, nasal, vomer, mandible, zygomatic, lacrimal
Boundaries between skull bones
sutures
Hollow spaces that help warm, moisture and filter air
Paranasal sinuses
What are the paranasal bones?
-frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid, maxillary
which bone does not articulate with other bones?
the hyoid bone
vertebral column consists of
-Vertebrae (24)
-cervical (7)
-Thoracic (12)
-Lumbar(5)
Sacrum (1)
coccyx
Vertebral Column contains Intervertebral Discs
-cushion pad made of ligaments and fibrocartilage to absorb as you move
what is a herniated disc?
a rupture of the disc
Thoracic cage includes
- ribs (12 pairs)
- sternum
What is the costal cartilage ?
hyaline cartilage that connects ribs to sternum
Disorders of axial skeleton (cleft palate)
right and left palatine bones don’t join medially
