Skeletal System Flashcards
What part of the body is the most seriously damaged as a result of microgravity?
Bones
Does the skeletal system continuously regenerate itself?
Yes
What does the bones store?
Your bones store calcium, phosphate and other minerals for your body
What is Hematopoiesis?
Your skeletal system plays an important role in Hematopoiesis , also known as the production of blood cells.
Where does the production of blood cells occur?
Production of blood cells occurs in the bone marrow.
How many bones are in the adult body?
There are 206 bones in the average adult human skeleton.
How are bones categorised by location?
By location, bones are categorised as either axial or appendicular.
What are bone shapes described as?
Bone shapes are described as: Long, short, flat and irregular.
What is the exterior of bones known as?
The exterior of bones is known as compact bone, which covers the spongy BONE.
What are the two types of bone marrow?
There are 2 types of bone marrow: red BONE Marrow, which produces blood cells, and yellow BONE Marrow, which stores energy as fat.
What is adjacent Lamellae?
Adjacent lamellae have collagen fibres that go in opposite directions, which helps to provide strength to the bones.
What are bone cells known as?
Bone Cells are known as osteocytes.
What are bone building cells known as?
Bone building cells are called osteoblast
What are bone cells that absorb or break down bone called?
Bone cells that absorb or break down bone are called osteoclasts
What do osteoclasts do?
bone remodelling.
What is Wolf’s Law?
Wolf’s Law explains that bone remodelling is related to the loads or stresses placed on the bone, which explains why in microgravity, astronauts lose bone mass.
What can we do to stimulate bone remodelling/strength?
Exercise
