Circulatory System Flashcards
Right Atrium
receives oxygen-poor blood from the body and pumps it to the right ventricle
Right Ventricle
pumps the oxygen-poor blood into the lungs
Left Atrium
receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and pumps it into the left ventricle
Left Ventricle
pumps oxygen-rich blood into the body
Pulmonary Artery
carries oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the lungs
Aorta
transports oxygen rich blood from the heart to the body
Pulmonary Vein
transports oxygen rich blood from the lungs to the heart
Superior Vena Cava
carries oxygen-poor blood from the head, neck, arms, and chest to the heart
Inferior Vena Cava
carries oxygen-poor blood from the abdomen and lower to the heart
Septum
keep oxygen-rich blood from the lungs from mixing with oxygen-poor blood from the body
Which artery is the largest and why?
the aorta is the largest artery because it has the most important job of carrying oxygenated blood from the heart to the whole body
What is the purpose of the coronary artery and what results if there is blockage in this vessel?
provides the main blood supply to the heart and supplies myocardium with oxygen that allows the heart to contract, leading to the circulation of blood. If there was a blockage, there wouldn’t be a supply of blood to the heart and the body wouldn’t have any blood.
Explain what systemic and pulmonary circulation is. How are they different?
systemic circulation carries blood from the heart to all other parts of the body and back again. pulmonary circulation exchanges blood and other tissue fluids between the heart and the lungs.
