Cardiovascular System Flashcards
How does the heart get blood?
THROUGH THE SYSTEMIC CIRCULATION, VIA THE CORONARY ARTERIES
What are Large Arteries sometimes known as and why?
Large arteries are sometimes known as ELASTIC ARTERIES because THEY CONTAIN ELASTIN WHICH ALLOWS THEM TO STRETCH, LIKE A BALLOON OR ELASTIC BAND.
The arterial side of the blood flow?
The arterial side of the blood flow is a HIGH pressure system, because IT RECEIVES THE HIGH PRESSURE OF BLOOD BEING PUMPED FROM THE HEART.
What structure do veins have that arteries do not, that prevents backflow of blood (allows for blood to only flow in one direction)?
VALVES
Name the valves of the heart?
TRICUSPID, PULMONIC, MITRAL, AORTIC
All heart valves are one way valves. Why is this important?
YOU DO NOT WANT BLOOD GOING THE WRONG DIRECTION, ONE DIRECTION ONLY, FORWARD
What caused the Lub Dub (Dup) sound that a heart makes?
THE CLOSING OF THE HEART VALVES
What causes the first heart sound, Lub?
THE CLOSING OF THE ATRIOVENTRICULAR VALVES (TRICUSPID AND MITRAL/BICUSPID)
What causes the second heart sound, Dub?
THE CLOSING OF THE SEMILUNAR (PULMONARY AND AORTIC) VALVES
Systole? Diastole?
Systole - CONTRACTION THE HEART
Diastole - RELAXATION OF THE HEART
