Homeostasis Flashcards
Definition of Homeostasis
A characteristic of a system that regulates its internal environment and tends to maintain a stable, relatively constant condition of properties
The balance of minerals and energy
What does it mean when Homeostasis fails?
- When homeostasis fails, it usually means disease/illness or injury to the body
- A common disease for this is Diabetes
Why do we sweat when we are too hot?
- To bring the temperature back to normal by letting the body sweat
- Evaporation cooling - as the liquid evaporates it cools
Why we feel the urge to urinate and be specific?
- Lowers blood pressure by reducing the the water in our body that we don’t need
- Activates baroreceptors
What are negative feedback systems?
controls systems that end to reduce the difference between the desired value of a variable and the observed value
What is an example of homeostasis
Blood sugar is another example of homeostasis. A hormone called insulin metabolizes the sugar in our blood so that it doesn’t stay in our blood and is used as fuel for energy.
Why do we shiver when we’re cold?
Heats the body by moving
Why do we sometimes feel dizzy when we get up too fast?
Orthostatic hypotension - When the blood doesn’t rise to the head fast enough
Exercising and needing oxygen?
You breathe harder to get more oxygen to your body/muscles.
What is Anatomy?
The study of the structure and relationships between body parts
What is Physiology?
The science of how those parts come together to function, and keep the body alive
