Skeletal system Flashcards
Four main functions of the skeletal system
Support
Protection
Storage
Movement

label skeleton
Cranium- head
mandible- jaw
phalange’s- fingers
patella- knee
humorous- upper arm
What are the 4 different types of bones found in the body? Know examples for each
type.
LONG BONES- Legs, arms, toes= compact bone tissue
SHORT BONES- = irregular cubes, ankle, bone of the wrist
FlAT BONES - skull, ribs, hips= protect organs
IRREGULAR BONES- irregular shape, vertebrae
SESAMOID- Small bones developed in tendons around joints- Patella
What are the 5 sections of the vertebrate? What is the responsibility of each section? How many vertebrae make up each section
CERVICAL- 7- support head
THORACIC - 12- connect rib cage
LUMBAR - 5- Large weight carrier
SACRUM- 5 fused- fused to pelvis- Distribute the weight of the upper body
COCCYX-4 fused- tail, site for muscular attachment
what are joints
JOINT is the part of the body where two or more bones meet to allow movement
To explain different joint movements, eg flexion/ extension etc
FLEXION: Angle between two bones is decreased
EXTENSION: Angle between two bones is increased
ABDUCTION: Movement of body part away from midline of body.
ADDUCTION: Movement of body part toward midline of body.
ROTATION: When a bone turns on its own axis within a joint.
CIRCUMDUCTION: rotation of shoulder
PRONATION: face palm down
SUPINATION: face palm up
PLANTARFLEXION: ankle pointing toes downward
DORSIFLEXION: ankle pointing toes upwards
INVERSION: turn sole of foot inwards
EVERSION: turn sole of foot outwards
