Skeletal System Flashcards
Ligaments attach…
Bone to bone
Tendons attach…
Bone to muscles
What are the 5 functions of the skeletal system?
Shape/support Movement Protection Blood cell production Mineral storage
What is movement?
Being able to move efficiently and effectively key to performance in sport
Synovial joints of body enable wide range of movements
What is protection?
Skeleton provides extra protection for vital organs when making contact with ground, equipment or other performers
What is blood cell production?
Body makes 2 million RBCs per second in red narrow of bones
WBCs & platelets also created
What is mineral storage?
Bones store calcium, phosphorus & iron
Body needs balanced levels of minerals in blood to work effectively
What are synovial joints?
Freely moveable
What is flexion and extension?
Bending limbs around joint, (closing the angle)
Straightening limbs around joint, (opening the angle)
What is dorsiflexion & plantarflexion?
Movement where toes brought towards shin
Movement where toes pointed away from shin
What is abduction and adduction?
Movement away from midline of body
Movement towards midline of body
What is circumduction?
Limb moves in circle
Ball & socket joint facts?
Locations: shoulder & hip
Movements: abduction, adduction, rotation, circumduction
Hinge joint facts?
Locations: elbow & knee
Movements: flexion, extension
Pivot joint facts?
Location: neck
Movement: rotation of head from side to side
