In 2005 released its ‘Physical Activity and Sports Development Strategy’ 5 key points:
Partnership – encouraging affective coordination and communication between strategies partners
Capacity dash developing community volunteer and club involvement in sport
Facilities – making sure Belfast has the right facilities in the right places
Participation – boosting participation in sports
Performance – looking at ways performance can be developed
Main ways to achieve goals:
Supporting schools and third level institutions
Building sustainable club and community development
Raising the profile of sport and physical activity in Belfast
Promoting health and physical activity
Developing coaches and volunteers
Supporting leisure centres to become developed & community-focused

Ensure disabled people have full access to sport & active recreation
Their mission - ensure disabled people have equal opportunity to live life to the full
Their vision - inclusive society where disabled people participate in all aspects of life

What are the factors that determine the successful operation of leisure facilities?
Accessibility - roads leading to it, location, parking, public transport, etc.
Ideally in middle of large populated area, has good road network & easy to find, with lot of parking & public transport to it
Quality of facility - quality of original build & design, programme of maintenance, efficiency of operating
Ideally designed for purpose(s), quality materials used, systems to make it easy to operate & detailed programme for maintenance
Cost to join/participate - membership fees depend on cost to operate & maintain, which sector it is
Ideally should make sufficient profit to maintain & refurbish often & have it well managed & staffed so customers get good value for money
Opening hours - depends on cost to operate and maintain, demand for use, which sector it is
Ideally open when customers want to use it, e.g. Open in early morning & evenings
Incentives like reduced entrance or membership to attract customers
Range of activities offered - depends on design of facility, demands of customers, cost of providing, which sector it is
Should offer activities customers want & activities best performed in purpose-built facilities that provide good value for money
Timetable of activities - depends on demands of customers, Opening hours, which sector is
Facilities should provide activities customers want & time they want them 
Quality of coaching - depends on demands of customers, cost of coaches, which sector it is 
should be able to offer quality coaching appropriate for age & performance level. If they aren’t improving or satisfied they’ll leave
Opportunities to improve & compete with other facilities - depends on facility management reviewing operation, listening to customers demands, drawing up & implementing plan to improve
Disability needs - depends on implementing law, listening to disabled people, facility management providing opportunities & programmes
Should be designed for easy access. Facility & staff able to cater for their needs. Management should listen to needs of customers

What career opportunities are there in the active leisure industry?
Leisure centre assistant - various maintenance & repair tasks, assisting & supervising centre users & administrating first aid
Sport & exercise scientist - application of science to sport & exercise, working with sports coaches, therapists, doctors & equipment designers to improve performance of individuals & teams
Sport psychologist - helps athletes, sports teams & coaches mentally prepare for competitions, e.g. overcome problems, improve focus & reduce anxiety
How can you ensure an active leisure event is successfully organised?
Event - clear objective & purpose
Feasibility - researching & considering everything about proposal in order to see if it’s viable to run event (will it work? Good idea? Market?)
Cost - to determine if event viable, basic financial info needed from this, budget produced
Timelines - enough time to get everything planned, booked & organised. Time for mistakes allowed
Facilities - decide on facility size, access & parking. Also hazards, equipment or weather considered
Health & safety - risk assessment made, evaluating hazards, control measures, first aid & toilets. Emergency plan discussed
Staff - decide how much staff needed, responsibilities & duties for each. Need to recruit & train them. Will staff be paid, or volunteers? Will staff be insured? Will they need fed?
Hospitality - covers attendants to event, guest speakers, special guests, providing transport, accommodation, catering, good facilities. People should leave feeling welcomed
Marketing - when promoting need to know what event is, where & when it’s held, how much tickets are & where to get them. Can be done through local newspapers, radio, T.V., etc. & should give them contact details of organiser so they can conduct interview or get further information
What skills are needed for successful event management?
Leadership - planning, coordinating work of people, tough decisions, staying calm, maintaining ‘big picture’, working with people
Communication - clearly conveying info & ideas through variety of media to individuals/groups that engages them & helps understand & retain message. Picks right medium, conveys message clearly, listened, understanding non-verbal communication, giving & accepting feedback, showing empathy
Interpersonal skills - used when interacting with others; communicating appropriately & effectively; making decisions; building & managing relationships; reflecting & evaluating work
Teamwork - working collaboratively with others, to move team toward completion of goals, shared responsibility - inspiring, applying, showing flexibility, working positively
Organisational skills - methodical & make courses of action for yourself & others to ensure work completed efficiently & on time - planning, coordinating, multitasking, recording and evaluating
Time management - plan & prioritise workloads so deadlines met - setting realistic & achievable targets, prioritising, scheduling, meeting deadlines
Financial - financial responsibility for overall & sub-team budgets. Total income should exceed. total expenditure. Should use good accounting system, analyse budgets & make adjustments
