Nervous System Flashcards
What is the nervous system’s main role?
Responsible for control of your body & communication between body systems
What is the sensory function?
During performance, your nervous system gathers info from inside & outside the body, sends it to the Central Nervous System (CNS)
What is the interpretive function?
Info on response interpreted in brain, decision made on what to do
What is motor function?
Info on response sent to muscles in appropriate parts of body to carry out response
What are the 2 parts of the nervous system?
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
What is the function of the CNS?
Consists of brain & spinal chord. Spinal chord carries info from body to brain. Brain intercepts info & makes decision. Info about response passed from brain through spinal to rest of body.
What is the function of PNS?
Consists of nerves going from CNS to all parts of body. 2 types of nerves in PNS:
Sensory: take info from receptors to CNS. Receptors sense changes in internal or external environments.
Motor: take info from CNS to effectors, so muscles carry out response of CNS.
What happens in the nervous system when learning a new skill?
Sensory input: eyes see demo, ears hear instructions
⬇️
Transformed into neural info & transmitted to brain
⬇️
It will become second nature/involuntary if done enough
⬇️
Stores info on how to do it in brain through spinal chord
What is short term sensory storage?
Within a sensory register in the brain, selective perception takes place. You select info that you think is important, with all other info discluded.
What is motor output?
Response generator handles way you organise your response to info. Response transmitted to muscles (effector) & you can then attempt to perform sequence of movement of the skill.
What is brain (cerebrum) - motor cortex?
Active when learning new movements or skills
What is premotor area function?
Used when carrying out movements or skills already learnt
What is brain (cerebellum) function?
Used as sorting office: decides what info is relevant. Smooths & coordinates actions of muscles & integrates one movement with next.
Propriocepters facts?
Location: semi - circular canals & small sacs in inner ear
Provide info on position of head & direction of head moving
What is the function of the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic system)?
Controls internal functions, like: Pupils in eyes dilate Bronchi in lungs dilate (more oxygen in) HR increases Force of contraction increases Adrenal glands secrete adrenaline Blood capillaries dilate - blood flows to muscles easier Digestive system stops working (info from interoceptors allows this to happen
