Q

How to draw a ring flip?

A

Mirror the chair conformation (including mirroring over the numbered carbons.) Place the substituents on the corresponding numbers but keep them in their original direction of up or down. This will result in flipping from axial to equatorial and vice versa.

Q

How to draw a cyclic compound into a chair conformation?

A

Always draw it in it’s most stable form. The groups causing more steric strain should be placed in lower energy equatorial positions.
