Skeletal Muscle 2 Flashcards
..
Classification based on duration of muscle twitvh
White (fast) muscle fibres
Extraocular muscles and hands for fine movement. 0.025 seconds contraction time
Slow(red) muscles Back muscles(longer contraction time) 0.1s
Factors affecting contractile response
Strength of stimulus Frequency of stimulus Load on the muscle Initial muscle length Temperature
Isotonic contraction?
When there is a constant force associated with shorterning(change in length of the muscle)
Isometric contraction
Constant length but change in tension of the muscle
If a muscle cannot work against a load then it can only generate
Isometric contraction
What are the 3 components of skeletal muscle
Contractile component
series elastic component
Parallel Elastic component
The contractile component?
Represents the thick and thin filaments in myofibrils. Viscous, resistant to stretch and unable to return to original length after shortening. Comprises 60 percent of total muscle proteins
SEC
Refers to the elastic tissue of the muscle which us present in series with the cc of the muscle. Consists of the elastic tendon of the muscle
PEC
elastic tissue of the muscle which is attached parallel to the CC. Structural elastic tissues of the muscle such as connective sheaths, sarcolemma and filaments. Explains why the muscle regains its original length after it is passively stretched
Optimum length of a muscle?
The length at which it will develop maximum active tension
Series and parallel arrangement o sarcomeres optimal for?
Velocity oof shortening and range of motion
Force production
