Lower Limb Anatomy Flashcards
..
Gluteal region ?
Region behind the pelv9s, extending from the iliac Crest superiority to the gluteal fold inferiorly
Gluteal fold indicates?
Lower border of the gluteus maximus muscle
Name of deep midline groove?
The natal(intergluteal) cleft
How many tarsals, metatarsals and phalanges respectively
7, 5, 14
The femur articulates with … proximally and…. distally
Acetabelum and tibia and patella
Action of muscles in gluteal region
Extend, abduct and rotate the thigh at the hip joint
Anterior compartment of thigh muscles action
Extend the leg at knee joint
Muscles at the posterior compartment of thigh(hamstrings) action
Extend the thigh at hip joint and flex the leg at knee joint
Medial compartment of thigh action
Adduct the thigh at the hip joint
Anterior compartments if muscles of the leg action
Dorsiflex and extend the digits
Posterior compartments of muscles of the leg
Plantarflex and flex the digit
Lateral compartments of the foot
Evert the foot
Muscles of the foot action
Support the arches of the foot
What are the muscles of the gluteal region
Obturator internus Gemellus superior (on top of a) Gemellus inferior (below a) Piriformis ( above a a little) Gluteus minimus (above piriformis a little) Gluteus medius (covers minimus) Gluteus maximus (covers all except some part of medius and tensor fascia lata) Tensor fascia lata (lateral side) Quadratus femoris
Note. Sciatic nerve directly under piriformis
Superior gluteal nerve supplies?
L4, l5, s1
Gluteus minimus
Gluteus medius
Tensor fascia lata
Inferior gluteal nerve supplies
L5 s1 s2
Gluteus maximus
Nerve to obturator internus supplies
L5, s1, s2
Obturator internus
Gemellus superior
Nerve to quadratus femoris supplies
L4 l5 s1
Inferior gemellus
Quadratus femorus
Why is the gluteal region usually designated site for injection
Large number of muscles. Less chance of damaging a nerve. Also, intramuscular injection enables a large amount of drug to be introduced at once but absorbed gradually
What is the safe area for gluteal injection
Outer upper quadrant
Femoral triangle is bounded by
Sartorious laterally
Adductor longus medially
Inguinal ligament superiorly
Contents of the femoral triangle?
Femoral van, lymph nodes
Popliteal fossa boundaries?
Biceps femoris - superior lateral
Semitendinosis + semimembranosid (superior medial)
Gastrocnemius (lateral and medial heads)
Plantaris very close to lateral gastrocnemius
Contents of popliteal fossa
Popliteral va
Common fibula nerve laterally
Tibial nerve medially
Branches of sciatic nerve
Illiopsoas attaches?
Below the lesser trochanter
Anterior compartment of leg muscles supplied by?
Deep fibular nerve
Tibialis anterior action and origin and insertion
Dorsiflexion, foot inversion
Tibia, tarsals
Extensor digitprum longus action and origin and insertion
Toe extension
Tibia and fibula
Phalanges
Extensor hallucis longus
Origin : fibula, interosseous membrane
Insertion: big toe
Action: extend big toe, dorsiflex foot
Lateral compartment muscles innervated
Superficial fibular nerve
Superficial posterior compartment innervated by
Tibial nerve
