Skeletal Muscle Flashcards
How does skeletal muscle differ to cardiac smooth muscle?
Voluntary, fast contractions, attaches to bone
Where are Z lines located on a sarcomere?
At the ends of the sarcomere
What do actin filaments form in the sarcomere?
They form the i band of the sarcomere
Where are myosin filaments located?
In the center of the sarcomere forming the A band
Are myosin filaments thick or thin?
Thick
What is the H zone?
A region in the A band where only myosin filaments are present and is bisected by the M line.
Where is the M line?
In the center of the sarcomere, running vertically
Where are titin filaments?
Titin filaments extend from the z line to the m line.
What do titin filaments do?
Provide structural support and elasticity to the sarcomere.
What is a motor unit?
The functional unit of muscle contraction and is made of a motor neuron and muscle fibres it innervates
