What does the kidney act as in the body?
A filter
What are the functions of the kidney?
Water regulation, removal of waste products, remove foreign chemicals in blood via urine, glucogenesis, hormone production
What are the basic renal processes?
Glomerular filtration, Tubular secretion, tubular reabsorption
What is the glomerular filtration rate?
Amount of blood filtered by glomeruli per minute
What does Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) do?
Causes insertion of aquaporins into the membranes of cells collecting ducts.
Why does ADH do this?
So water flows out of the collecting ducts to be reabsorbed by the body
What do the kidneys do during exercise?
Conserve body water, Excrete metabolites
What mainly controls water reabsorption?
ADH
What controls sodium reabsorption?
Aldosterone and ANP
