Brain & Nervous System Flashcards
What does the CNS consist of?
Brain and spinal chord
What does the PNS consist of?
Nerves
What does Basal Ganglia do?
Assist in planning and initiating movements, useful for smooth movements
What does the Thalamus do?
Relay station for signals related to different areas of the brain
What does the Cerebellum do?
Aids and coordinates refined movements
What does the Brainstem do?
Maintains muscle tone and controls reflexes
What does subcortical movement do?
Ensure movements are all well coordinated and purposeful
What does the Primary Motor Cortex do?
Decides and sends signals to make specific movements
What does the Premotor Cortex do?
Plans and organises movements, especially ones that require co-ordination
What does the Supplementary Motor Area do?
Plans and initiates movements, particularly movements that involve both sides of the body
What does the Somatosensory Cortex do?
Processes information related to touch and body position, contributing to the precision of movements
What do Cortical movements do?
Makes decisions about what movements to perform and plans how to execute them
