Homeostasis Flashcards
Define Homeostasis
The condition of equilibrium in the body’s internal environment
What does a receptor do?
Detects then converts changes into electrical signals that are sent to the control centre
What does the control centre do?
(Usually the brain) Receives input from receptors, then determines an appropriate response.
What does the effector do?
Organs, muscles or glands that carry out the response that is dictated by the control centre.
What is a negative feedback loop?
When a variable triggers a counter-acting response
What is a positive feedback loop?
Increasing the volume of the variable instead of generating a counter response
What is a reflex response?
Requires knowledge from an integrating centre and circuitry that connects the receptor and effector
What is a local response?
Allow individual parts of the body to self regulate responses to certain conditions
