Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What are the basic principles of haemodynamics?
Blood flow, cardiac output, blood pressure
What is the difference between cardiac and skeletal muscle?
Cardiac muscle is involuntary and is highly oxidative
How do electrical signals make a heart beat initiate?
The SA node generates electrical impulses to create a beat
How does contraction and relaxation of the heart cause ejection and filling?
During systole the heart pumps blood into the arteries whereas in diastole the heart relaxes to allow blood into the atria and ventricles
How do valves maintain a one way flow through the heart?
During systole, the tricuspid and mitral valve close to prevent backflow to atria. Whereas in diastole, the pulmonary and aortic valves prevent backflow into ventricles.
What makes the heart work harder and accommodates higher metabolic functions?
What factors affect blood pressure?
Age, Gender, Hydrostatic pressure
How do veins act as a reservoir?
By storing most of the body’s blood portion for periods of inactivity?
What are the functions of the lymphatic system?
Fluid balance, Fat absorption, Facilitation of immune system
