Q

Describe briefly, the process of hormone transport, metabolism and excretion.

A

The endocrine cell secretes the hormone into the blood which goes 1 of 4 ways. Either excreted via urine or feces, inactivated by metabolism, activated by metabolism which will lead to a targeted response, or it just goes straight to the target cells for a response.

Q

What does the posterior pituitary gland (PPG) do in the endocrine system when linking to the hypothalamus?

A

Hormones are synthesized in the hypothalamus, axons are passed down and are terminated in the PPG and release hormones

15
Q

How does the APG and Hypothalamus link?

A

Secretion of APG hormones is mainly controlled by Hypothalamus hormones via the portal vessels connecting the two

16
Q

What is the function of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4)?

A

T3 is required for normal production of growth hormone from APG.

17
Q

What are the functions of cortisol in non stressful situations?

A

Affects responsiveness of smooth muscles to epinephrine and norepinephrine, maintains certain enzymes in metabolic homeostasis

18
Q

What are the functions of cortisol in stressful situations?

A

Better CV performance, protects against influences of stress, inhibits inflammation and specific immune responses, inhibits reproduction and growth

19
Q

What does growth hormone do?

A

Acts directly onto cells to stimulate protein protein synthesis, secretion is highest in adolescence
