Situational Variables Flashcards
What is a situational variable
Features of an environment that affects the agree to which individuals yield to group pressure.
What is the Bickman study
The Bickman study in 1974 investigated how uniforms affect obedience in 153 randomly selected new York pedestrians.
The confederates wore either a guard uniform or milkman uniform and ordered people to pick up bags in the street or giving people small change.
what where the finding of the Bickman study
Found people obeyed the guard 80% of the time
found people obeyed the milkman 40% of the time
Ao3 of Bickman
Supports mailgrams study of uniforms where perceived social roles affect conformity
- lack of control extraneous variables
- participant variables
-Internal and external volatility
What Milgram variations are there
Location;
conformity dropped from 65% to 47.5% in a rundown building suggesting prestigious atmosphere affects obedience.
Culture;
conformity changed from 65% (original study in USA) to 16% in Australia (female students). Cultural bias as only developed country’s but has internal volatility.
Uniform;
Bickman study- conformity changed form 80% to 40% due to different perceived social roles from uniforms.
Proximity;
Milgram variation where student and teacher where in same room caused conformity to drop to 40%
When instructions where given over telephone fell to a further 20.5%. shows the closer the affected are the less obedient as well as the further away the instructor.
Milgram a03 and supportive/weakening study’s.
Orne said the procedure aims where known so responses where fakes (Milgram agreed)
However replica study had 80% conformity as well as same anxious symptoms Milgram mentioned.
what are the 4 situational variables
culture, Uniform, location and proximity
