Locus of control is the sense of perceived influence over life consequences.
Internal-Personal control of responsibility which is more likely to resist social pressure.
External-Environmental control on life where they are more likely to be influenced by others.
What is the A03 of the dispositional explanation
Holland replicate Milgram's study , 37% of internals did not conform completely, 23% of externals did not completely conform. from 1960-2002 child samples showed an increase in external locus. for; -supportive study -scientific volatility -impactful against; -demand characteristics (NSI) -not generalisable -inference -study counteracts idea
What is the situational explanation
Social support is the idea of having someone to back you up Making it easier to resist as according to NSI you will still be liked.
What is the A03 of situational explanation
Milgram’s study obedience dropped to 10% with introduction of disobedient conformities.
Asch study dropped to 5% when 1/2 confederates gave right answers
Gamson found more resistance 29/33 when they where in groups (Milgram’s study)
Allen (asch)- Even when the confederate who gave correct answers wore thick glasses conformity dropped.
