Conformity Flashcards
What does NSI stand for
Normative social influence
What does ISI stand for
Informational social influence
What is NSI
Normative social influence is the need to be liked and is an emotional response when seeking social approval (strangers or fear of rejection) in stressful situations.
What is ISI
Informational social influence is the need to be right and is a cognitive response when concerned for social appearance (perceived experts) in new or crisis situations.
What study supports ISI
Lucas et al
used a student mixed group participant and asked a series of hard and easy math questions.
found when questions where easy participants knew there own mind but when questions where hard they conformed to incorrect answers a perceived expert said was right.
What study supports NSI
Asch’s study
used 123 male us graduates and asked them to identify a matching line length compared to 3 other lines. groups of 1 confederate and 4 participants. out of the 18 trials, confederates answered wrong 12 times.
found participants gave wrong answers 36.8% of the time. 75% conformed at least once.

what are the 3 types of conformity
compliance-agree publicly, disagree privately
Identification-Perceive to belong (group)
Internalisation- Completely agree
What are NSI study variations
Varied group size, unamity and difficulty.
group size;
-varied number of confederates. curvilinear relationship where where 3 confederates conformity increased to 31%. shows sensitivity to others opinions
unamity:
-reduced conformity by 80% when confederate disagreed with other confederates.
difficulty:
-increased difficulty of judgment causing conformity to increase.
