- Assist a failed train.
- Evacuate passengers from a failed train.
- Remove a portion of a divided train.
- Remove a train or vehicles that have proceeded without authority.

What colour flag will be shown to let you know that the Controlled Level crossing protected by a Signal is safe to proceed?
- A Yellow Flag
When would you have to temporarily isolate TPWS during modified working?
If you have to pass two consecutive signals at danger. Before leaving that section you must reinstate TPWS.
Where can Modified Working be used.
Only at locations where authorised in the:
- Sectional Appendix
- Signal Box Special Instructions.
How will you be notified of SLW?
You will be notified in the:

6.2 Additional instructions for wrongdirection movements
What additional instructions would you expect from the pilotman for a wrong direction movement during Single line working?
- The location of any intermediate handsignaller.
- If a main aspect signal will be used to control movements back to the proper line.
- The location of any handsignaller placed to control movements back to the proper line.
6.1 Authorising movements in either direction
Before authority is given to enter the single line in either direction, what must the pilotman inform you of?
6.1 Authorising movements in either direction
- Over which line Single Line working applies & between which Crossovers.
If there is more than one crossover at either end of the section, you must make sure the driver clearly understands which crossover is being used for single line working.
Define modified working?
Modified working arrangements may be used to allow a train to pass through a single-line section without introducing working by pilotman.
Principle
What is the definition of Single line working?
- When one line of a double line becomes blocked, single line working by pilotman allows trains to travel over the other line in either direction.
What must you do before you enter the single/bidirectional line?
Before entering the single line you must:
- Identify the pilotman wearing an armband (left arm, white lettering on red background).
- Clearly understand all instructions.
- In possession of a completed RT3156 ticket.
- Have pilotman’s authority to enter the single line.
What colour flag do you require to pass a Main Aspect Signal?
Yellow Flag
Who must you inform before entering the single/bidirectional line section?
You must always inform the guard.
During modified working, what is the permissible speed over points, Switch diamond or swing-nose crossings?
You must not exceed 15mph over any of these points at any time during modified working.
Module
What is the Module name for Single Line Working?
- Module P1
What must you do before handing the RT3193 (Single line working) ticket back to the Pilotman?
- You must cancel the ticket, by writing cancelled across the ticket.
Would you pass over a Barrow or Foot crossing with white-light indications with no wrong direction controls?
- Approach at caution
- pass over the crossing if safe to do so.
How would you cross a Manned level crossing protected by signals where the normal position of the barriers is across the road?
- Approch the crossing at caution and only pass over when you are sure the crossing is closed to road traffic.
When returning to the proper line and a signal is provided how do you return to the proper line?
- When the main aspect signal clears.
Who will give you your instructions for modified Working arrangements?
The signaller will dictate a RT3177 ticket to you.
When travelling in the wrong direction what is the permissible line speed?
- Up to 50mph.
What must you be prepared to do at locations where a hand signaller must be present?
- You must be prepared to stop at each of these locations unless a proceed hand signal is shown, and you have already been given the authority to obey all handsignals. If no hand signaller is present stop and contact signaller.
Who must you Identify before entering the single line?
What must you clearly understand?
Who’s authority must you have before entering the single line section?
Before entering the single line you must:
- Identify the pilotman wearing an armband ( left arm, white lettering on red background).
- Clearly understand all instructions from the pilotman.
- Have pilotman’s authority to enter the single line.
When will a Handsignaller not be required to control wrong-direction movements back to the proper line?
- A main aspect signal which applies to trains leaving the single line is provided at the crossover.
- A Pilotman travels with every train over the single line in the wrong direction.
