semiotics
the theory of signs, sign systems, and sign processes. the basis of communication theory. studies syntax, semantics, pragmatics.
semiotic process
a message is dispatched from sender to recipient, who decodes the message. the sign (marked in a particular code (e.g. language)) describes its object and is interpreted by recipient
syntax
a theory of connections between the individually marked signs, addresses formal aspects and their interconnection.
pragmatics
deals with the relationship between senders and recipients, the sign users
semantics
looks at the meaning of something marked (it refers to something and thus expects it to be interpreted)
sign
the connection between something signified (the conceptual content side of the linguistic sign) and the signifier (the expressive side of the linguistic sign)
3 sign classes
icon, index, symbol
ideogram
a sign that represents an entire concept, and thus uses symbolic signs for abstract terms
symbol
represents a thing, and abstract idea or process. hard to define.
pictogram
a pictorial symbol with a fixed meaning. intended to pass on subject matter unambiguously, quickly, and very strikingly.
marks / seals of quality
used to guarantee the quality of goods/services
emblems
signs indicating belonging to a group/state/family
logo (mark or signet)
a graphical or typographical sign representing a company or an institution and is used to distinguish between the same goods/services from different manufacturers/providers
design criteria for logo
attitude, presence, universality, succinctness, recognizability, consistency, economic viability
creative elements of a logo
form, color, proportions (size, width/length, distances apart, positions), lettering
