Signal Transduction 4: Relationship Of Signal Transduction To Disease And Review Flashcards
What do B2-adrenoceptor agonists target?
GPCRS, to treat symptoms of asthma
What do b2-andrenoceptor agonists do?
Reverse bronchoconstriction associated with asthma (examples being; salbutamol (ventolin) and salmeterol (serevent))
What is similar to epinephrine and can act as a b-agonist?
Salbutamol
What does salbutamol do?
Binds, so the phosphorylated myosin light chain kinase causes muscle relaxation
What do diabetes drugs mimic?
The actions of natural glucoregulatory hormones (eg symlin mimics amylin)
Where is anylin produced?
Beta cells of pancreas
What does symlin do?
Reduces eating and causes weight loss but is rapidly metabolised so are developing long acting analogues
What does insulin do?
Helps balance blood glucose levels
How is insulin used as a diabetes drug?
It mimics the natural actions of this hormone at the insulin receptor (an RTK- receptor tyrosine kinase)
What can a melanocortin 4 receptor mutation cause?
Extreme obesity
What is cholera caused by?
Disrupted cell signalling
What does a cholera toxin do to the receptor?
It locks G into its active form, causing disease
