Check every 3-4 hours, even at night
Monitor even when feeling better - can take time for blood glucose to go ack to normal.
- Remains uncontrolled = see GP
Monitoring not needed in Type 2 unless on insulin
Insulin
Never stop
Monitor blood glucose and adjust dose according to requirements
Carbs
Maintain normal meals.
Cant eat = replace meals with carbohydrate containing drinks (e.g. milk, fruit juice)
3L of fluid a day
Seek urgent help if:
- Drowsy
- Cant keep fluids down
- Persistent vomiting and diarrhoea
Ketones
Check ketones (blood + urine) every 3-4 hours, even at night
See GP if:
- Urine ketone = 2+
- Blood ketone = >3mmol/L
Metformin
Stop if dehydrated due to increased risk of lactic acidosis
Gliflozins
Stop if dehydrated, can cause volume depletion
