Short term control of blood pressure Flashcards
What determines mean arterial pressure?
MAP = CO x TPR
CO - cardiac output (HR x SV)
TPR - total peripheral resistance
What is the baroreflex?
Bodies homeostatic mechanism to maintain BP at almost always constant levels, mediated by constant monitoring of blood pressure by baroreceptors
Where are baroreceptors found?
Wall of the aortic arch
Carotid sinuses
Where is information regarding blood pressure from the baroreceptors relayed to?
Medulla
How are baroreceptor induced changes in blood pressure mediated?
Autonomic nervous system - both sympathetic and parasympathetic. FAST
Atrial natriuretic peptide. SLOW
Renin-angiotensin system. SLOW
Vasopressin. SLOW
Describe the valsalva manoeuvre
Forced expiration against a closed epiglottis
Test of cardiac function and autonomic control of the heart, or to equalise pressure when ambient pressure changes
What are the two main functions of arterioles?
Local - to meet needs of tissues
Central - to regulate MAP
