Sheet and Block Modelling Materials Flashcards
What is Plasticine used for? What equipment is needed?
Block modelling. Hands and modelling equipment are good.
What are advantages of Plasticine? Disadvantages?
+ Can be vacuum formed and is recyclable. Quickly shaped.
- Not easy to achieve a good quality finish.
What safety points are there for Plasticine?
None!
Is it biodegradeable?
Yes!
What is balsa wood used for? What equipment is needed?
Block modelling. Abrasive paper, a file or rasp, and acrylic paint.
What are advantages of balsa wood? Disadvantages?
+ This is rigid and much stronger, can be used as a mould.
- Difficult to work quickly and is more expensive.
What safety points are there for balsa wood?
None!
Is balsa wood biodegradable?
Yes!
What equipment is foam board, a composite foam board with card backing, used with? What’s the board used for?
Safety rule, craft knife, shapes can be laser cut, and a good glue. POS stands.
What are advantages and disadvantages of foam board?
The board is rigid and images can easily be attached with spray adhesive. It can be cut with complex shapes and can be drawn on. A disadvantage is that the board can easily tear if hand-cut and isn’t easily recycled.
What are safety points for foam board?
Use a safety rule.
Is foam board biodegradeable?
No!
What is styrofoam used for and what is it made with?
Used for block modelling. Can be used alongside acrylic paint, abrasive paper, a file or rasp, and plaster of paris.
What are advantages of styrofoam?
It is good for block-modelling in 3D.
What are disadvantages of styrofoam?
Not easy to achieve a good finish and needs a filler such as plaster of paris.
