What is Shabbat?
The Jewish holy day.
What do Jewish people believe on Shabat?
God made the earth in 6 days and rested on the 7th
What do Jews believe about days?
That they are periods of time. They believe they are still in the 7th period of time in the creation story since God hasn’t created anything new.
What day of the week is the beginning for Jews?
Sunday
What day is Shabat on?
Saturday
Where does the word Shabat come from?
The Hebrew word “Shin-Beit-Tav” which means to cease, to end or to rest.
When does Saturday begin?
When they see the moon on Friday since they follow the Lunar calendar (moon calendar.)
Before Sundown what does the women of the house do? (stage 1)
Light 2 candles (women lead home worship)
Then what does the Farther do? (stage 2)
Say prayers over the children.
What does the Farther do next? (stage 3)
Pours wine into a special cup. He says a prayer and takes a sip and the cup is passed around and everyone takes a sip.
What happens next? (stage 4)
Everyone washes their hands in a special cup.
What happens next? (stage 5)
2 loves of bread called Challah are uncovered. They were made the day before since you can’t cook on Shabat.
What happens in stage 6?
The bread is cut and a bit of salt is poured on it. Everyone takes a bite.
What happens in stage 7?
Everyone enjoys a meal that lasts the whole evening. They share news and sing songs.
What happens in stage 8?
When 3 stars appear on Saturday night Shabbat is over. A special candle is lit.
