What does Bat/Bar Mitzvah mean (translation)?
Bar/Bat means son/daughter and Mitzvah means of the commandment.
What age is a Bar Mitzvah (boy)?
13
What age is Bat Mitzvah (girl)?
12
What do they do to prepare?
They get help from a Rabbi to read a scripture in Hebrew.
What scripture do boys read?
They read a section directly from the Torah using the Yad.
What scripture do girls read?
They read a poem called Eishit Chayal.
What do boys wear?
Kippa, Tallit and Tephilin.
What do girls wear?
Smart clothes
What happens after the ceremony?
There is a party
What religious responsibility happens afterwards?
Boys must attend the synagogue every week on the Shabat. Girls don’t have to but may.
Why do girls have it a year before boys?
Because girls mature faster.
What non religious responsibility do they take on?
Looking after siblings, having more freedom and taking responsibility for their sins (before than their parents took responsibility)
What is the order of the ceremony?
They read their reading and have sweets (blessings) thrown at them then they have the after party.
What is a Kippa?
A Jewish religious hat
What is a Tallit?
A prayer shall. It has 613 tassels on it to represent the 613 commandments.
What is Tephilin?
They wear it on their arms and head. They have leather straps. They wear it on there hands they don’t write with to remember to serve God with their heart and the one on their head represents to serve god with their mind. The had has 4 compartments, one for each scripture. The arm has 1 compartment, the 4 scriptures written on 1 piece of parchment. They are hand written by scribes and checked every few years for fading. The scripture is about wearing Tephilin.
