What is an international migrant?
Someone who moves from one country to another in order to establish a new permanent place of residence .
What is inter- regional flows?
Between countries which are NOT located in he sane region of the world e.g. syria to europe
What is intra-regional flows?
Between countries that belong to the SAME region in the world e.g. migrant flows within a continent.
What are the causes of migration?
push and pull factors, intervening obstacles
What is push factor?
Cause a migrant to move from their country of origin. Could be due to poor job opportunities, poverty, natural disasters, persecution , war etc.
What is a pull factor?
These attract a migrant to a destination and can range from better job opportunities, good housing and welfare services.
Why does migration continue?
Might be relatively small inequalities in the area. Migrants however may be able to send back large remittances which may increase the inequalities between families who do and don’t receive the money.
May also be an effect on the destination country. The jobs which are taken by immigrants may come to be seen as low status and unattractive to natural citizens creating a demand for migrant labour.
How and why has global migration become so complex?
- Conflict and persecution has increase the number of forced migrants
- Economic globalisation is changing the patter of migrant flows
- The number of young workers and female migrants is increasing
- Changes in nations immigration and emigration policies
- Migration flows in South: South corridors i.e. between LIDCs is increasing.
What are the 3 types of forced migration?
- IDP
- Asylum seeker
- A refugee
What is an IDP?
Internally Displaced Person is someone who is forced to flee their homes but remain in their own country.
What is an asylum seeker?
A person who is trying to get refugee status in the host country, but whose claim for refugee status as not been assessed.
What is a refugee?
Someone who has sought asylum and has been assessed as having genuine fear of persecution or death.
Why are the number of global refugees increasing?
- Increasing war and conflict
- Ongoing war
- Increased population
- Pressure on services
- Fleeing from persecution (culture, religion, race
How does migration link to economic globalisation?
- Increased workers
- Sending remittances back
- Communication- knowing about the country
- Travel is much easier today
- More links between each country e.g. Trans National Co-operation.
Why is the number of young migrants increasing?
More opportunities for their age. They’ve skills from education. Technology for communication.
