A

The Afghan communists seized power but overthrowing leadership.
However the communist ideology contrasted sharply with traditional Islamic beliefs.

What happened in 1979-89?

A

Russia invaded Afghanistan in 1979 to try and support the new communist regime.
They meet fierce resistance from the Mujahadeen (Islamic freedom fighters among Osama Bin Ladin).
The USA is worried so they supply the Mujahedeen with weapons to help them defeat the Russians. War lasted 10 years!

A

War creating unstable, unsafe country. Migrated because for a save place and also a neighbouring country.

A

The Taliban take control of Afghanistan and introduce law and under through strict interpretation of Sharia Law.
Al Qaeda was given free reign in the mountains by the Taliban and allowed to run terrorist training camps.

A

A

The UN establish the ISAF (peacemaking troops) which provided increased security.
Later taken over by NATO.

The impact of an influx of refugees on host countries:

A

The refugees are dependent on the Iranians and Pakistanis for their weekly ration of food (rice,peas,sugar etc).
Also half the refugees suffer diseases which are slowly disappearing in Pakistan and Iran.
The huge influx of refugees has resulted extensive environmental damage in Pakistan with trees cut down.

What is the Solutions Strategy?

A
The UNHCR came up with ‘The Solution Strategy’ which involves Afghanistan, Pakistan & Iran working together on the repatriation of Afghan refugees. 
Ashraf ghani (current president) stated ‘it is imperative that the the refugee camps in Afghanistan’s borders be peacefully dismantled and their inhabitants reintegrated into Afghan society’

What are the types of UNHCR involvement to one of the ‘Three Pillars’?

A

UNHCR will run free workshops which provide skills training to Afghan refugees to help them get jobs in their homeland: support refugees which will help them get a job.

Under the UNHCR voluntary repatriation scheme, each Afghan returnee refugee will receive a cash grant and free travel back: support to Afghans who agree voluntary repatriation.

The temporary stay of registered Afghan refugees in Pakistan is documented but means of Proof of registrations cards. Pakistan has agreed to extreme the expiry of these cards: assistance and support to host countries.

A

A

Migrant remittances benefit families- 78% of families who receive remittances from family members use them to meet their daily needs.
Migrant remittances can stimulate development- remittances equivalent to 30% of the country’s GDP.
A lower population relieves pressure on resources.
Migrants being new ideas, values and skills to a community stimulation development.

Challenges arising from emigration?

A

The outflow of refugees led to a sudden drop in the population of Afghanistan- abandoned farmland means only 6% of Afghanistan is currently cultivated. This led to food shortages and high food prices.
Large number of refugees living in neighbouring countries- might create conflict if more people are going there because that country will develop and not theirs.
Some highly skilled migrants choose to live abroad rather than return to Afghanistan- downfall because this leaves Brain Drain.
