Modes of Transmission
- Sexual transmission
- Bodily fluids (saliva, blood)
- Skin-to-skin contact
- Sharing of needles and needle stick injuries
- Vertical transmission (mother -> fetus/infant)
Chlamydia
Caused by: Chlamydia trachomatis
Symtoms: Vaginal/penile discharge, pain, dyspnea
Treatment: Antibiotics
Gonorrhea (the clap!)
Caused by: Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Symtoms: Discharge of pus, dysuria, urethritis
Treatment: Antibiotics
Syphilis
Caused by: Treponema pallidum
Symtoms: Syphilitic sore (rash, fever), miscarriage
Treatment: Penicillin treatment
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
Caused by: HIV virus (retrovirus)
Symtoms: Opportunistic infection
Treatment: Antiviral drugs
Hepatitis B Virus (HBV)
Caused by: Hepatitis B
Symtoms: Liver cirrhosis, cancer, and failure
Treatment: Vaccine available
Hepatitis C Virus (HCV)
Caused by: Hepatitis C
Symtoms: Liver inflammation, cirrhosis and cancer
Treatment: No vaccine available
Genital Herpes
Caused by: Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)
Symtoms: Blister-like lesions, pain, itching
Treatment: Acyclovir and other antivirals
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
Caused by: Human Papillomavirus
Symptoms: Genital warts
Treatment: Cryosurgery, laser or alpha-interferon
