McIntosh - Sexuality
Homosexual role- the expectations of homosexual men to have certain characteristics and effeminate mannerisms (higher voice and attention to appearance). Once a man identities as homosexual he might take on this role. So he accepts the label and starts to behave in the way they feel is excepted of them.
Rich - Sexuality
Compulsory heterosexuality- women’s sexuality is oppressed by men in a patriarchal society through sexual
violence, rape and sexual objectification. Women are socialised into a subordinate role ensuring their availability to men. Lesbian identity is constructed as abnormal because it’s a threat to male dominance over women.
Weeks - Sexuality
Belonging- people don't say 'I am heterosexual' when talking about identity, but saying 'I am gay' says something about belonging and your sexual codes.
Plummer - Sexuality

career’ when someone is gay they
might choose certain subcultures and
seek out others like them.
