The Medical Model - Disability

A

Sees disability as a medical problem focusing on the limitations caused by the impairment. Leads to ‘victim-blaming’ mentality where the problem lies with the disabled individual, rather than with a society who has not met their needs.

The media may create and reinforce an i identity through portraying disabled people in a stereotyped way. Representations of disability in an oppressive and negative way. Seen as in need of pity (Sia’s autistic film ‘Music’), victims (Wonder film), villains (The Joker), a burden (Little Britain - Andy faking disability), sexually abnormal (undateables), rarely seen as ‘normal’.

When people become disabled later in life - they used to feel pity for this group and now they are that group - this can lead to ‘learned helplessness’, where disabled people internalise the idea that they are incapable so fail to take action for themselves.
