How does stigma affect individuals?
Lower self-esteem, feelings of loneliness and/or isloation, increased risk of depression and possibly hopelessness, increased risk of suicide, potential for additional medical illness and/or concurrent disorders, interferes with ability to live and function independently, interpersonal relationships and social interactions, learning, recreation, and employment possiblity, accessible health care system and medication compliance.

Increased need for community resources that provide basic necessities, rejection, isolation, violence/criminal behaviour, stigma, marginalization.
What can we do to combat stigma?
- Education programs

- Reintegration and vocational problems ->promote back to work/school programs

- Advocate for change in public policy re:access/flexibility/comprehensivity of programming

Community mental health model was introduced, downsizing meant a loss of inpatient beds, facilities were created (Cedar Ridge, Timber Creek), inadequate & insufficient funding resulting in staffing shortages, lack of adequately educated/trained personnel, inappropriate use & lack of community services, some patients ended up in residential care or corrections, increased number of people with mental illness became homeless, 4% of schizophrenic patients live in a care facility, 15% of jail and prison population have SPMI
