What is an external crisis?
Result from actual events/circumstances in the environment.
What is an internal crisis?
Subjectively perceived and experienced.
What is a maturational crisis?
Occurs during the course of normal growth and development.
What is an adventitious crisis?
Occur as a result of extraordinary events.
What is a psychiatric emergency?
Sudden or serious psychological disturbance.
What are four characteristics of a crisis?
Crises involve specific, unexpected, and non-routine events.
Crisis creates uncertainty.
Crises create perceptions of threat.
Crises are processes of transformation during which the old system can no longer be maintained and the need for change is identified.
What are five components of crisis?
- A hazardous or traumatic event.
- A vulnerable state.
- A precipitating factor.
- An active crisis state.
- A resolution of the crisis.
What are the four phases of a crisis?
The individual is exposed to a stressor.
Previous coping and problem-solving strategies fail to relieve the stressor.
Resources from in and outside of the individual are mobilized to resolve the problem and to alleviate the discomfort caused by the stressor.
The absence of crisis resolution leads to major disorganization.
